So you have a whole new design palette ready to go for your new bathroom, including new cabinets, fixtures, and countertops—but what are your options in terms of adding some luxury amenities to take it right over the top? For your consideration, I have outlined below of a couple popular additions that have made my Los Angeles remodeling clients happy time and time again.
1. A lot can be done with some creative use of shower heads and hydrotherapy fixtures. One option is to replace your existing head with an entire wall of heads. Coupled with an overhead deluge, this is one of the most invigorating experiences you can treat yourself to in the comfort of your own home. Often called a Swiss Shower or a Vichy Shower they transform your shower routine into a full body experience that leaves your muscles loose and relaxed to begin the day.
2. You could replace an old bathtub or shower with a hot tub, jet tub, or whirlpool. First you must make sure that your subfloor is sufficient to hold the maximum weight of both water and people (it’s best to have a contractor take a look to verify this). If you are good to go in this respect, then jetted tubs are one of those gifts that keep on giving.
Essentially an aerated bathtub, jet tubs come in just about every size and shape, and with a variety of different features available. As the unit is much larger than your normal tub, these tubs will fit inside a frame that is built to custom on site. Once placed, they can be finished out with any treatment you choose—including ceramic or stone tile to match your current bath décor. It is also possible with a little more structural work to recess the tub directly into your floor.
3. Another popular addition, especially in colder parts of the country, is to install a heated floor for added comfort on cold mornings. Most in-the-floor heating setups consist of a single thin heating element which is woven into a membrane and installed under the floor. This would be something to certainly consider if you are already thinking of tearing out the floor for replacement, as it will not only provide comfort to your feet, but add some supplemental heat to make the whole room comfortable in those early morning hours.
There are a number of benefits with the addition of a heated floor. For one, they are a very safe and effective way to provide extra heat to your bathroom space. As a single mat that lies under your floor, they are generally easy to install as well, and once installed take up zero space in the room. They are also relatively inexpensive to operate, running at about the same wattage as an electric blanket.
These are just a few options that we have found our Santa Monica home remodels to benefit greatly from. Do some investigating to see if any of these options will fit into your bathroom plans, and you will find that a little luxury is not so far out of reach.
